EPA to ban on Toxic Chemicals in water

The Biden administration is taking a significant step to protect public health by proposing a ban on trichloroethylene (TCE), a highly toxic chemical commonly used in various products, including stain removers, adhesives, and degreasers.

The move is based on mounting scientific evidence that TCE is “extremely toxic” at low levels of exposure, leading to a range of health issues, from carcinogenic properties to liver toxicity, neurological damage, and potential links to Parkinson’s disease.

TCE contamination in drinking water has been identified as a cause of cancer clusters, particularly in military bases.

The ban, if finalized, could save lives and reduce healthcare costs, although the chemical industry is opposing the rule.

Public health advocates have praised the administration’s action, emphasizing the need for swift implementation. The ban, however, may take a year or longer to become effective, and its fate could be influenced by future political changes.
