PFAS in Drinking water a Threat

The Biden administration has taken significant steps to address the issue of PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals,” which are challenging to remove and pose health risks.

The U.S. is now proposing its first-ever drinking water standard for PFAS, setting stricter regulations than the EPA’s 2016 limits.

The proposal aims to regulate six specific chemicals, particularly PFOA and PFOS, with a limit of 4 parts per trillion. It also sets limits on four other similar chemicals. Public water systems would be required to monitor these compounds and notify the public if they exceed the limits.

This move is seen as a historic step to protect public health, but some worry about the high costs of compliance, while others argue that addressing the source of PFAS production is equally vital.

The Biden administration has been working on this issue for over a year, with funding allocated to address emerging contaminants, including PFAS, in drinking water.
